What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which your breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night. One of the most common forms of this condition is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the throat collapse and block the airway during sleep. This blockage leads to snoring, gasping, or even choking sounds as your body struggles to breathe. These episodes can occur multiple times per night, disrupting your sleep and reducing the amount of oxygen that reaches your body andΒ brain.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can have severe consequences for your health, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and daytime fatigue. Fortunately, effective treatment is available atΒ Dental Care AcworthΒ through custom oral appliance therapy, offering relief from sleep apnea symptoms and allowing you to enjoy a healthier, more restful night’sΒ sleep.

The Link Between Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring is often a key indicator of sleep apnea. While occasional snoring can be harmless, loud, frequent snoring may signal an airway obstruction that can lead to more significant health problems. Snoring is caused by the vibrations of tissues in the throat as air struggles to pass through a narrowed airway. When left untreated, this can contribute to poor sleep quality and other health complications, including daytime drowsiness, irritability, and cognitiveΒ issues.

Oral appliance therapy offers a simple yet effective solution for both snoring and sleep apnea by keeping your airway open throughout the night and reducing or eliminating snoring altogether. If you’re looking for a Acworth dentist who can help you find relief, Dental Care Acworth is here to support you every step of theΒ way.

Customized Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea

At Dental Care Acworth, we offer oral appliance therapy as a comfortable, non-invasive solution for treating mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. A custom-fitted oral appliance works by gently repositioning the lower jaw forward, preventing the airway from collapsing during sleep. This allows you to breathe normally and reduces the risk of airway obstructions that cause snoring and sleep apneaΒ episodes.

Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy

  • Non-Invasive Treatment: Unlike surgical options or the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, oral appliances are small, easy to wear, and do not require invasive procedures. This makes them an ideal choice for patients who prefer a more comfortable and convenient treatment option.
  • Comfortable and Convenient: Custom-fitted to your mouth, these appliances are designed for maximum comfort and are easy to use, making them a popular choice for patients who struggle with CPAP compliance or find CPAP machines uncomfortable.
  • Improves Sleep Quality: Oral appliances help reduce snoring and alleviate symptoms of sleep apnea, allowing you and your partner to enjoy a better, more restful night’s sleep. By improving the quality of your sleep, you can also experience enhanced energy levels, mood, and overall health.

If you’re searching for a dentist in Acworth, GA, who offers a non-invasive approach to treating sleep apnea and snoring, Dental Care Acworth is your trusted choice for personalizedΒ care.

Relief from Snoring and Teeth Grinding with Oral Appliances

Snoring isn’t the only issue that can be treated with oral appliances. If you also grind your teeth (a condition known as bruxism) while you sleep, our customized oral appliances can offer double protection. Teeth grinding can lead to damaged teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and other complications. By wearing an oral appliance, you can protect your teeth from the harmful effects of grinding while also treating sleep apnea andΒ snoring.

How Oral Appliances Help with Teeth Grinding:

  • Protects Teeth from Damage:Β The appliance acts as a cushion between your teeth, preventing wear and tear caused by grinding.
  • Relieves Jaw Pain:Β Bruxism can lead to jaw discomfort and headaches. A properly fitted appliance helps reduce tension in the jaw and relieves these symptoms.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea Treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea, a type of sleep apnea, is related to airway obstruction due to jaw and tongue position. Dentists can recognize oral structures and offer oral appliance therapies to keep the airway clear while sleeping.

Sleep apnea can be cured with proper treatment and lifestyle changes. To cure it, dentists recommend customized oral appliance therapy, which ensures that there will be no air blockage when you sleep.

You can experience symptoms like loud snoring, gasping and choking during sleep, waking with headaches, dry mouth and daytime fatigue. Fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating are also red flags.

When you keep it untreated, you may develop hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Plus, because of the poor sleep, your concentration may affect your daily life as well.

Snoring generally happens when there is a blocked airflow. But, whenever your breathing continuously starts and stops, then you can call it sleep apnea. So, you can say that not every snoring means you have sleep apnea, but loud snoring can be connected to the condition.

Decided to give this office a try as I haven’t been to a dentist in a while bc of some bad visits other places and let me say this place changed my whole perspective. Dr. Melissa was excellent and thorough with everything. Jessica cleaned my teeth and did an amazing job. Both were very patient and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. I 100% recommend this dental office and they for sure have a return patient going forward!

I had such a great experience at this dental office!! Maggie is incredibly sweet and caring! She made me feel comfortable right away and took the time to walk me through everything she was doing. Dr. Hayer was just as amazing. He was very thorough when going over my X-rays and clearly explained a plan for my dental care moving forward. I also had fillings done, and the whole process was quick and completely painless. I felt zero anxiety during the procedure, and both Maggie and Dr. Hayer were both so reassuring throughout! The entire team was professional, kind, and welcoming. Overall, one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this office if you’re looking for a place that truly prioritizes comfort and care!

So glad I found this dental office. They are kind, efficient and reasonably priced. The check in process is simple, and I was able to schedule my consultation online without having to call anyone, which is a huge plus for me. I’ve been there twice now and haven’t had to wait long to be called back. The office is pleasant and inviting with comfortable seating in the waiting area. I’ve seen Dr. Hayer and Maggie both visits and I’ve never had such gentle work done in my mouth. There is a TV to watch while having dental work done and soothing music played, too. I originally came here for a second opinion and ultimately got my crowns done here and have made this my dentist for preventive care as well.

My recent appointment was a very positive experience. While I've been to this office many times, this was my first occasion meeting Dhara who did my cleaning. She is very kind, funny, and personable. She calmly and clearly explained my treatment plan along with the associated costs. Dhara even gave me toothbrush recommendations and did a great job at easing my nerves and making me feel very comfortable. She is very professional, efficient, and answered all of my questions. Thank you!
